Oscar Rodriguez

Oscar was born in El Progreso, Honduras.

He has lived in Bloomington since 2000 as an exchange student with Ivy Tech and was later hired to teach there (engineering, technology).

He hopes to establish a foundation that will help developing nations establish technical schools anywhere they are needed.

Self-motivation

“I started learning English when I was 13, I didn’t go to any private school, I started learning by myself, they said to me “you don’t even know how to speak Spanish well but you want to learn English” and one English (speaking) person once told me “don’t destroy my language”… now that was a powerful statement, but it raised up something strong in me and this was what I thought, if this guy can speak Spanish, cause he told me that in Spanish, why can’t I speak English as well…?”

Latino contribution to community

“People sometimes think that Latino or Hispanic people are not capable, and that’s not true, it’s just a matter of opportunities…each Hispanic can do something that is different here, to show the people that “yeah they are valuable”…Hispanics are capable, we’re capable we can make things happen, it’s just a matter of opportunity.”

Oscar Rodriguez smiles warmly at the viewer.
