My family

"My parents are of Mixteco origin. Mixtecas are people who live in a certain region of the country. Like the Mayans, the Aztecs, it is a culture, a small population, with strong roots… They speak Mixteco… My father has maintained the family united, that we take certain things of the community, as the food, to appreciate the type of province music and to be close to the family… Before coming to Bloomington I went to see my grandparents in Tepejillo, Mexico.

Describing the photo:

My grandpa is called Felix and my grandma is called Victory. This it is Tepejillo. This is the part of the kitchen, you can tell that is different, life is simpler… There is electricity…but my grandpas learned to live with firewood. My grandma still makes tortillas from scratch. She makes tortillas at home and cooks them in a grinding stone.”

Arrival to Bloomington

“I came directly to Bloomington. I was for about one month trying to adapt to here because on one hand I was cold because it was March and the temperature wasn’t very high and compared to the temperature I was used to, I was very cold, I didn’t want to go out, I watched lots of television and in part I didn’t want to go out a lot because I didn’t know English, so sometimes I would be terrified that I would meet people that was going to ask me something (in English)…and I couldn’t understand, and it’s something very funny that I still have to live with…when people talk with me and I don’t understand, I become very nervous…I can understand very well but I can’t respond.”
